Introduction...

My name is Samuel Jeppsen. I’ve been a cop for 24 years. About 10 years into my career, Jeff, an ex-cop and friend of mine, told me something I never forgot. He said being a cop is like being on a twenty year mission for Christ. He said we can do things for Christ by doing things for people that no one else can do, simply because of the hat we wear. His words reminded me of a cartoon I once saw. It was about a little boy who was saying his prayers before going to bed. He asked God to protect him while he slept. The cartoon showed a burglar looking in at the boy as he was saying his prayers. When the boy was finished, he jumped into bed and asked himself, “I wonder if God ever hears our prayers?” The next part of the cartoon showed two cops arresting the burglar outside the window of the little boy while he slept, unaware that anything had taken place at all.

                        “Remember, ...we work for God!”
Lt. Commander Vernon J. Geberth, NYPD

As Jeff finished what he was telling me, I thought, how true! In fact, how true for everyone, no matter what field they are in. Because of the hat you wear, you can do things for Christ, by doing things for others, that no one else can do. Wanting to do things for others was part of my strong motivation for becoming a cop. One of the things I’ve come to learn in over 24 years of law enforcement experience, and it seems to be a standard throughout is,

he who tells his story first ...gets most of the belief!

In other words, he who gets to the officer first and tells his side of the story, has a greater chance of being believed. Even though that is not true all of the time, it is true more times than not. When an officer walks up on a scene, after the first story he hears, he usually has his mind made up on what happened, who did it, and who’s going to jail. Yet, we are trained investigators. We are trained to listen to both sides of the story impartially. We are trained to weigh the facts before we make a decision. And to a large degree, we do that. But I constantly see the evidence of, he who tells his story first gets most of the belief! We the police, have the tendency to get both sides of the story from the same side. Isn’t it ridiculous to be that way? Trained investigators being prejudiced by their first impression! Surely the police are not that way! Well, guess what? ...We are! Do you know why we are that way? Because we are people and people are that way. We bring with us into these uniforms all of our human weaknesses, prejudices, hatred, immaturity etc. and all too often our human weaknesses show through.

My point in telling you this about cops, is to tell you that because of your human weaknesses, you are the same way. You too, have a tendency to judge both sides from the same side. You too, have the tendency to believe the first story you’ve been told. How many times has someone told you something and by the end of their tale, you shared their same feelings? How many times have you judged a situation based on only one side of the story? This book is about getting the other side of the story as well.

This book is the result of a five year project. It is a summation of a three year in-depth investigation. It deals with the greatest investigation of my life. Because a court of law requires evidence that is credible, neutral, fair and accurate, I have tried very hard to produce evidence that would meet these requirements. In my efforts to insure neutrality, where possible, the sources used in this book are non- LDS. Like a police report, much of the information and history is from the people who lived it. Actual witness statements from eye-witnesses.

This book is probably one of the most unusual religious books you will ever read. Why? Because besides all the police stories this book has, I am a professional (meaning trained and paid) investigator. For twenty-four years, I have been trained to deal with facts, logic and reasonableness. I am a gatherer and presenter of evidence. My expertise is in the field of identification, collection, preservation and the presentation of evidence.

                                  Last but not least,
it is my job to testify to the truthfulness of that evidence.
...And that is how this book was written.

Each chapter is a separate investigation as it pertains to the greater investigation. It is a series of
investigations with each investigation being a natural and logical step forward in our pursuit to find the answers to two extremely important questions. Those being, “Does Jesus Christ really have a singular true church?” And if so, “Which one is it?” The only way to fairly answer those two questions is to investigate for yourself. But before you begin, I warn you of this most important investigative fact: As in all investigations, but especially this one, where you are seeking the true church of Jesus Christ, you must separate the love and loyalties you have for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from the love and loyalties you have for your church. Those feelings are not one and the same. If you don’t realize that, your investigation will be biased and your conclusions will be slanted. That is a true statement regardless of what religion you are. Only the true church will be able to stand the investigation; the acid test. A scary statement to many, but true none the less.

“Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins
and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my
commandments, shall see my face and know that I am; and that I am the true light that
lighteth every man that cometh into the world.” Doctrine and Covenants, 93:1-2

The very first question that has to be asked and answered by you is this,
“Do I want to know if there really is ...one true Church?”

A tough question that only you can answer.
But sooner or later, you have to answer it.

                                                         Samuel
